Sir Richard Branson was born in 1950 to a family of successful business people. His father, Edward James Branson, had been an officer during the Second World War, and his mother, Eve Branson née Farrand-Jones, had worked as a secretary before her marriage.

He attended Scaitcliffe School until he was 13 years old. Then he attended Stowe School for two years. He did not graduate from either school but instead opted to begin his education at age 15 by enrolling in The Leys School Cambridge.
